RUGBY UPSET
DEFEAT OF CELTIC OLD BOYS OPEN UP READ AND SHARP SHINE ANOTHER MARIST WIN A Rugby upset was caused in Gisborne on Saturday by the defeat of the senior championship leaders, Celtic, by Old Boys, in a dazzling display in ail departments. The best attendance of the season was at the Oval for the Poverty Bay Union’s competitions. The stars of the Old Boys-Celtic match were A. Read and M. Sharp, who gave an excellent demonstration of determined low tackling, which was responsible for breaking up the majority of the Celtic attacks. An improvement was shown in the form of H. 5.0.8., who held Marist to a short lead throughout. W. McKinley, inside back for Celtic seniors and one of the Gisborne football family of McKinleys, has finished his Rugby career as a result of a knee injury received in the game against Marist. On Saturday he took over from George Dunn as coach of the Celtic juniors. He has been playing for the seniors for the past eight years and has been suffering from a knee injury for the past three seasons. Results: — Senior Grade.—Old Boys 8, Celtic 6: Marist 16, H. 5.0.8. 9. Junior Grade.—Old Boys A 14, H. 5.0.8. 3; Celtic 22, High School 3; Marist 10, Old Boys B 5. Third Grade. —Marist 9, Old Boys 8; Celtic 20, H. 5.0.8. nil. Championship Points Celtic shai’es the lead in the senior competition with Marist as a result of their defeat by Old Boys.
