Reeves, C. E. Smith and P. T. Weeks. At the monthly meeting of the council, held immediately afterwards, a letter was read fr6m the Tairawhiti district Maori Land Board asking for

a release of the rate charging order on Mangaheia 2RI block. The council decided to affix the seal of the council'to the document. Unexpended Balances The Public Works Department advised that all monetary authorities held by local bodies against which there were no commitments had been cancelled and that two schedules should be prepared showing the present position of unexpended balances. The clerk was instructed to supply the information. The Department of Labour advised that as no unemployment existed in the district no subsidised laboura could be made available. Percy, stated:— “Arakihi Riding.—lt is proposed to tepdress, where necessary, th<* Tolasa-

Gisborne, via Waimata, highway and a portion of Kiore road. This work will be put in hand at an early date-

‘'Tauwhareparae Riding.—On the Waihapua road, at the first slip, the road has been metalled and a culvert and water chute have been placed. This should be capable of carrying light traffic throughout the winter. The erection of a low level bridge at Wigan is well in hand. It was found necessary to increase the length of this bridge from the original proposals. The lengthened structure will provide a much greater waterway, and consequently will be less liable to flood damage. “Mangaheia Riding.—Good progress is being made with the metalling of the Mangaheia station road; about eight chains, apart from the present culvert, would complete the metalling to Mr. Hick’s gate. The contractor has made a start on the Mangatokerau formation work. “Hauiti Riding. Patching with heavy metal will be put in hand on Shelton’s road at an early date.”
