WIDE RESPONSE URGED APPEAL BY PREMIER (Per Press Association.) . WELLINGTON, this day. .. The following statement was mSde yesterday by Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fras'er: “On behalf of the Government, I desire to endorse the request conveyed by the GovernorGeneral, Viscount Galway, that His Majesty’s appeal for the observance of next Sunday. May 26, as a day of prayer and intercession should meet with the widest response. “In this hour of grave danger, when the evil forces of Nazism are threatening our civilisation, it is fitting that the churches should call: upon their people to join in a fervent appeal for spiritual help and moral guidance. Christians throughout the world will, I know, unite in response to His Majesty’s solemn call and offer up their heartfelt prayers for Divine aid and for a just and lasting peace.” In addition to two short addresses, the Prime Minister and the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. will read portions of the Scriptures at the citizens’ intercessory service in the Wellington Town. Hall on Sunday. The leaders and representatives from all sections of the nation will be present at the service. GISBORNE OBSERVANCE SERVICES ON SUNDAY Sunday has been set aside as a day of penitence and of prayer for peace, and all church buildings will be open throughout the day. There are to be services at all Gisborne churches at II a.m: and 7 p.m. At ttje request of King George, the special day of prayer on Sunday will be universal throughout the Empire. Members of the South African Veterans’.,. Association in Gisborne and territorials will attend a church parade at Holy Trinity Church, Derby street. APPEAL TO GOLFERS NO PLAY NEXT SUNDAY (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The council of the New Zealand Golf Association has sent the following memorandum to clubs affiliated to the association: “As the King has requested a ddy of intercession next Sunday, it is the wish of the council that aii golf clubs should refrain from holding competitions on that day.”
