‘NO MORE HUMBUG’
DUNEDIN DEMAND “NO TIME FOR STALLING” DOMINION WAR EFFORT PUBLIC MEETING PLANNED (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. “We are sick of the public apathy in this matter. We are sick of the small efforts being made and of the restrictions that are being imposed on us by ‘red tape.’ This is the time for no more humbug. It is the time for no more stalling tactics. It is the time for the leaders of the country to come out of their ,‘funkholes.’ ” In these words Mr. W. K. Cameron, president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, expressed the feelings of large and influential deputations consisting of some 100 Dunedin business men who wailed upon the Mayor, Mr. A. H. Allen, in the council chambers yesterday morning to demand action to counteract the present widespread apathy in this country in regard to the national conduct of the war.
The deputation, which had been formed at very short notice, made a request that the Mayor should convene a public meeting of citizens to make its views known to the Government.
His Worship readily consented. The meeting is to be held in the Town Hall this evening. To enable all citizens to take part in this demonstration of loyalty to the Mother Country and her ally France, the Mayor has requested all retailers to close their premises at 8 p.m. today, thus enabling their staffs to attend the meeting. The utmost enthusiasm prevailed at yesterday morning’s gathering, members of the* deputation being unanimous in their support of the speakers.
