NEW FIELD TAPPED
HIGH SCHOOL TRAINING AID TO MOTOR TRADE NEW CLASSES STARTED Reports on the affairs of the Gisborne High School were' heard yesterday afternoon at a meeting of the board of governors. Those present were Messrs. L. T. Burnard, chairman, H. H. De Costa, E. H. Baker, J. H. Sunderland, Thomas Todd, F. Wrey Nolan, Dr. A. L. Singer, the rector, Mr. James Hutton, and the secretary, Mr. C. H. Bull. An apology for absence was received from Mr. E. O. Upton. The rector, Mr. James Hutton, said that there 53 apprentices in the motor trade attending special evening classes. This had the effect of providing apprentice training for a section of the younger members of the community that had not been tapped previously. An apprenticeship committee was formed to act as a link between the trade and the school. Mr. Hutton was of opinion that attempts should he made to induce employers not to engage hoys unless they had had two years’ post-primary training. He had been amused over the manner in which the word “technical” had been used, said Mr. Hutton. He explained that “technical” was a word that was wrongly used. No technical work was done at the Gisborne High School, neither was vocational work. The only technical work was carried out at the evening classes. The proper term to use was / pro-vocational work, and that was done entirely. Mr. Hutton was congratulated by the board on the work ho was carrying out in an attempt to give more importance to the necessity or postprimary instruction for youths.
