CRIPPLED CHILDREN
CASES IN GISBORNE ENCOURAGING RESULTS WORK OF SOCIETY Encouraging results have been shown by the cases under the care of the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children’s Society. At the annual meeting, held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms on Tuesday night, the president, Mr. F. W. Nolan, said that the calls on the society had not been heavy, this being due to some extent, to the fact that some of the children to whom the society had been giving assistance had left the district during the year, but it was anticipated that the calls would be heavier during the coming year. “Several of the • cases under (he care of the society are showing very encouraging results,” said Mr. Nolan. “One boy, who has spent a considerable time in hospital, has considerable musical talent, and the society is carrying on the cost of his tuition in music, in which he is showing steady progress. He has also shown great ability in wood carving. The society has provided him with a set of carving tools, and some of his work was shown at the Centennial Exhibition, where it received much favourable comment. “Another case has been given lessons in dress-making, and prior to her leaving the district, was well on here way to having reached the stage of providing herself with a means' of livelihood. Appliances for Children “A child who previously could only get about by means of an invalid chair has been provided with a tricycle which enables her to transport herself without assistance. “Other children have been assisted to obtain surgical boots and other appliances to alleviate their disabilities, and parents have been .helped with the cost of transport in cases where treatment has been necessary outside the district.” The annual report also expressed regret at the death of Mr. Howard Kenway, who had been a member, of the committee, and thanked the case committee and the secretary, Mr. Mainland L. Foster, for their willing assistance. The revenue received for the year, the report showed, amounted to £B4, : and the sum spent, in benefits and assistance to crippled children to £36. After providing for administration expenses, £3 4s 4d, a balance of £45 had been carried forward. The election of the executive resulted: —President, Mr. F. W. Nolan; vice-president, Mr. J. Peach; committee, Mrs. Balfour, Dr. H. Goulding Rice; Messrs. Chas. Matthews, J. E. Shimmin, Jas. Hutton, T. Adams and J. O. Musgrave; secretary, Mr. M. L. Foster; hon. auditor, Mr. C. A. Smith.
