NEWS OF THE DAY
This Morning’s Frost A frost of one degree was recorded this morning at the Gisborne meteorological station, Darton ’ Field aerodrome. Final Wool Appraisement Although wool appraisements in Gisborne and Tolaga Bay have been completed, apart from the slipe wools in Gisborne. 2000 bales remain at Tokomaru Bay. Arrangements have been made for appraisers to visit Tokomaru Bay ‘on May 29 to deal with the clips stiff there. The Social Security Act A little-known clause in the Social Security Act came before the notice of the Supreme Court in Hamilton during the hearing of a claim for damage's brought by a cyclist who was injured in a collision with a motor car. Counsel said that while plaintiff was in hospital he had received £2 10s a week from the Social Security Department for his wife and children. Under the Act this money was repayable in the event of plaintiff succeeding in his claim, and an allowance for this had accordingly been made in the special damages claimed. Incidents in Army Life “I hope I shall not he taken as an advertisement for the army, for I am rather inclined to suspect that our ser-geant-major at Burnham thinks I am one of the worst parade-ground soldiers in camp,” said the Mayor of Invercargill, Lance-Corporal J. R. Hanan, at the opening of the Invercargill Winter Show. “In fact, he says a lot of nasty things to me and lets me know in no uncertain terms that, although I may have been Mayor of Invercargill, the only things that count with him are that there shall be no speck of dust on the trigger guard of my rifle, that my head shall be erect, stomach in, chest out, and eyes on the hat of the man in front of me. And this is certainly as it should be. But it is a change to come home to clean sheets and revel in a hot bath, and I do not mind my wife asking me to remember to use the butter knife. My comrades in Burnham may consistently steal my candle and always take my tobacco, but let me tell you this—that they would share their last shilling with me. But if Britain has 1,000,000 or 2,000,000 of the same calibre there, there is not much doubt that they will be marching up the streets of Berlin one day ‘Rolling out the Barrel’ in the Unter Den Linden."
