EARLY SETTLERS
EMPIRE DAY GATHERING ARRANGEMENTS MADE Arrangements for the celebration of Empire Day on May 24 by early settlers, in co-operation with the Victoria League and other women's organisations, were made at a meeting held in Bon Accrod tea rooms last night, Mr. Archie Kirk presiding. The East Coast Centennial Celebrations Committee advised that badges would be presented to the early settlers, and if possible, some distinguished visitor to the town would be asked to perform the presentation ceremony, but if no such visitor was available the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., would carry out that duty. Full accord was given to the Empire marketing week scheme, and it was decided to refer the matter to the Chamber of Commerce and tc the Retailers’ Association for their attention. In addition to the Empire Day celebrations on the afternoon of May 24, when early settlers would take a prominent part, it was agreed to hold a dance in the evening. Persons wearing old settlers’ badges would be admitted free to the dance, and they would be given sole use ol the floor until 9 o’clock.
