RED CROSS SYMBOL

SHOW CATERING FUNDS PRESIDENT’S SANCTION “GOT INTO HOT WATER” The announced purpose of the Gisborne Show catering funds and their eventual disposal provided the subject for an explanation at the annual meeting of the Poverty Bay A. and P. Association yesterday afternoon. The question was raised by Mr. R. C. Parker, who said that some of the public seemed concerned that whereas the Poverty Bay Women’s Central Representative Committee had announced that the funds were to be devoted for Red Cross 'purposes, the money had not been paid to the Red Cross Society. The president, Mr. Roland Graham, said that the £SOO raised by the Women’s Representative Committee was intended for patriotic purposes. The permission of the local president of the Red Cross Society, Dr. A. L. Singer, was secured for the purpose of using the symbol of the Red Cross for the effort, although Dr. Singer knew at the time that the funds would not- be handed to the Red Cross Society. Mr. Graham added that the women’s committee and the East Coast Patriotic Council were using the money to help men who were leaving on war service, and each man, departing after his final leave, was being presented with a parcel containing comforts. A substantial part of the money still remained untouched. Concluding, Mr. Graham said he understood that the president of the Red Cross Society had “got into hot water” for taking so much responsibility on his shoulders.
