NAZI AND DUCE GIRRALTAR SAFEGUARD (Reed. May 11, 11.50 a.m.) ROME, May 10. The Italians first heard the news of the invasion of the Low Countries at 8.20 a.m. Some officials and the Press Ministry declared that they were unaware of the news. Signor Mussolini is believed to have been told early in the morning. The German Ambassador, Herr von Mackensen, visited Signor Mussolini. A Madrid radio broadcast states that the British authorities have closed the Straits of Gibraltar. Italy is reported to be massing troops on the French frontier.
