POPPY DAY RETURNS j 1939 FIGURES BEATEN GISBORNE R.S.A. APPEAL COUNTRY DOES WELL i The 1940 Poppy Day appeal, conducted on April 19 by the Gisborne j Returned Soldiers’ Association and its j branches throughout the district, will | set a record with a gross return not; far short of £560, according to present indications. It is certain that the 1939. figures, £512 12s Gd, will be passed by P a good margin, even if the results still to come to hand from four sub-asso-ciations do not exceed last year’s from the same sources. Town sales on April 19 yielded £312, country sales £9l 9s 4d, and school emblems £ls 4s Gd. Donations to the Poppy Day funds, exclusive of Anzac Day collections, provided £39, and Anzac Day collections another £G 19s 9d. The town sales of poppy blooms' just passed the figure for 1939, despite, weather conditions which could hardly have been worse. Country and Coast sub-associations appear to have done extremely well. Ruatoria returned £27 Is Gd, Tolaga Bay £l6 10s, Nuhaka £2l 9s 9d (including the proceeds of an Anzac Day collection, £4 19s 9d), and Tikitiki £5 lGs (including £2 collected on Anzac Day). All four of these branches ! established records for their areas. The | branches from which final returns are not yet to hand are Waikohu, Tokomaru Bay. Matawai and Te Araroa, all of which are expected to improve on last year’s figures, which were:— Matawai, £lO 17s Gd; Tc Araroa, £5 8s; Waikohu, £SO; Tokomaru Bay, £l3 16s. Preliminary returns from Tokomaru Bay and Waikohu have given an | assurance of improvement in their final figures.
