COAST ROAD BLOCKED

WORK NEAR HICKS BAY OTHER HIGHWAYS CLEAR The East Coast scenic highway from Gisborne to Opotiki, via Cape Runaway, is blocked at a point slightly north of Hicks Bay, and motorists intending to make the through trip are advised to make inquiries before setting out. It is understood that the road will be blocked at that point for some time. In his report this morning the resident A.A. patrol, Mr. G. V. Merton, said that all other routes were clear. During the night three vehicles became firmly stuck in the soft surface of the highway where the alignment of the route is being straightened oil the Hicks Bay side of 'the Waimate Stream. Efforts to extricate the vehicles early this morning failed because of the length of the surface affected, approximately 200yds. It was not possible to get a surface close enough to the stranded vehicles that would be suitable as a grip for the wheels of a lorry to tow them out.
