Last Night's Forecast a General Situation: A deep low pressure centre still persists olf the cast coast of tlie South Island and a new centre, which has formed in North Auckland, is moving towards it. The anticyclone over Tasmania is still remaining stationary. Forecast: Winds,'strong southerlies continuing on the east coast of the South Island and reaching gale force in exposed positions, elsewhere winds' moderate and rather variable at first but southerlies freshening again later. Seas: In New Zealand waters, rather rough to rough north of Kavvliia and rough to high south of Kaikoura, elsewhere slight to moderate but later rising somewhat Eastern Tasman Sea: Strong southerly winds to gates anct rough to high seas. Weather: Fair in Westland, elsewhere unsettled with steady rain or drizzle s#iil probable in Canterbury, Otago and Southland, and intermittent falls in most other districts. Temperatures: Becoming colder later, with snow on the ranges. To-day’s North Island Report Barometric readings at North Island stations this morning were steady between 990 and 1000 millibars, and temperatures at !) a.m. were mild, Cape Maria van Dienum returning 58 degrees, Auckland and Tiritiri 55, East Cape and Gisborne 54, Cape Palliser 53, and other stations ranging down to 48 at Castlepoint. Winds were generally westerly north of East Cape, and southerly below that point, of light to moderate force everywhere. Overcast conditions prevailed at all stations, though Cape Maria, Auckland and Tiritiri reported patches of blue sky. Visibility was fair to good except at Castlepoint. where tlie range of vision was under 200yds. Seas were rough at Taitranga, Napier, and Wellington, elsewhere smooth to moderate. Midday Forecast General situation: A deep cyclone is centred near Poverty Bay and a stationary anticyclone covers southeastern Australia and the Tasman Sea. Forecast: Moderate to strong southerly winds reaching gale force at times. Weather: Cold and unsettled with further rain, some heavy falls and possible flooding. Seas: Rough to high.
