DUBLIN BATTLE
DETECTIVES AND I.R.A. ATTEMPTED MAIL THEFT MACHINE-GUNS USED THREE MEN WOUNDED (Elec, Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 8, 11 a.m.) DUBLIN, May 7. A desperate battle between detectives and six men believed to be members of the Irish Republican Army armed with sub-machine guns occurred in the centre of Dublin, when an attempt was made to seize mails which were being conveyed to the office of the British representative, Sir John Mafl'ey. Detectives were escorting the mails on motor-cycles when a gang opened fire near Merrion Square and the detectives flung themselves to the ground and replied with revolvers. The rattle of machine-gun fire sent bystanders flying for cover. Two detectives were seriously wounded, one having a revolver shot from his hand. One bandit was left lying in the roadway when the rest of the gang escaped in an automobile.
