CONCERN VOICED

WAIROA RIVER PROBLEM TALK OF PROTEST (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Concern at the possible danger of flooding in the town as a result of the present condition caused by the blocking of the outlet to the Wairoa River was expressed at the quarterly meeting of the Wairoa Chamber of Commerce. The president, Mr. R. Dryden, sta*ted that if a flood came the river might take a short cut through some of the business premises in the town. If the river could rise to the level of the bridge with an open bar he wondered what would happen with the outlet as it was at present. “I don’t think the Harbour Board realise the seriousness of the question,” stated the secretary, Mr. S. M. Ashburn. Tf nothing of a concrete nature had yet been done he favoured the calling of a public meeting 'of indignation. It was reported that the Public Works Department had the matter in hand and was furnishing a report on the matter. No action was taken by the Chamber.
