GERMANY’S HOPES
SCANDINAVIAN ALLIANCE ROLE OF PROTECTOR LONDON, March 20 • Despatches from Sweden state that Germany hopes to participate act-, ively in the proposed Scandinavian defensive alliance. They point out that the arrival of; Nazi officials in Stockholm has been coupled with a ■ redoubling of propaganda efforts to persuade the northern countries that Britan and France are trying to “make a battlefield of Scandinavia,” and that, therefore, salvation lies in German protection. The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, commenting on Russia’s attitude, states: “It is persistently reported from Moscow that the Soviet will demand a free port in both Sweden and Norway, and will also enforce an increased supply of high-grade steel in exchange for raw materials from Finland, Sweden and Norway.”
