GALLANT RESCUE

' ! CERTIFICATE AWARD SAVED MAN AND SON TRAPPED IN SUNKEN CAR (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. • In. recognition of the promptness and gallantry in the rescue of a man and his young son, who were trapped in a motorcar which had overturned into deep water in the Waerenga Stream in August, 1938, a certificate of commendation has been awarded by the Royal Humane Society to Mr. Cedric B. Carley, of Waerenga. After swerving to avoid a stationary car, the vehicle turned a somersault and fell into the stream which runs alongside the Te Kauwhata-Waerenga road. The driver, Mr. Walter O’Brien, of Te Kauwhata and his seven-year-old son were trapped in the car, the body of which was completely submerged. Called by his wife, who had seen the accident, Mr. Carley plunged fully dressed into the stream and, with great difficulty, extricated the two occupants. Both Mr. O’Brien and his son were unconscious and it was at first thought the boy was dead. However, artificial respiration was applied by Mrs. Carley and both were revived.

The certificate was presented to Mr. Carley at a gathering at Te Kauwhata by the chairman of the Waikato County Council, Mr. Sampson.
