NEW GISBORNE FUND £B4 FORMS NUCLEUS WOMEN'S POLO EFFORT BUSINESS OF COUNCIL A cheque for £B4 10s to be used as the basis of a fund to buy tobacco for the Gisborne members of the fighting forces overseas has been received by the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council. The money was the proceeds of the work carried out by the Poverty Bay Women’s Representation Committee at the recent polo tournament in Gisborne, and was received at the council meeting yesterday afternoon.
The women were congratulated on their splendid effort by the chairman, Mr. Chas. Matthews.
Objection to Request
Correspondence from the National Patriotic Council contained reference to a strong recommendation made to provincial councils to contribute £IOO each towards the nucleus of a fund to provide regimental funds for the Second Echelon: that the .money be ’■emitted to tire national ■.council and that the secretary obtain from the Army Department the strengths of all units in the Second Echelon and divide the total received proportionately among each unit. The secretary. Mr. W. M. Jenkins, reported that objection had been taken to the suggesting and that the national council had been advised that Gisborne would offer up to £25 pro rata on a population basis provided that other provincial councils did likewise. Mr. A. G. Hicks advised that patriotic committees were being formed in Ruatoria and Waipiro Bay. Flag Day Proceeds £483 Reporting on behalf of the finance committee, Mr. W. C. Kohn said it had been decided to hold only one function for men returning to their camps and that when the men were departing after final leave. The proceeds from the flag day appeal totalled £483 5s 3d. The treasurer. Mr. M. J. White, said there was a credit in the bank of £ll6O 8s 7d. The Te Hokowhitu-a-tu Maori Women’s Central Committee reported that with -the addition of money raised by the Te Karaka branch the credit balance was now £BO 13s. Advice was received that the cost of comforts placed aboard troopships carrying the First Echelon overseas was £1750, and that £39 7s 6d was due from the Gisborne council. Wool Council’s Offer An offer by the New Zealand Wool Council to visit Gisborne with the fashion parade that had been on show at the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington was received. It was decided to ask for further information and to state that the council was favourably disposed towards the suggestion. Thosp present at the meeting were Mr. Chas. Matthews, chairman, Mesdames G. A. Nicholls. R. IT Burke and W. A. McCliskie. Messrs. W. C. Kohn. M. J. White. R. P. Baigent, 1. J. Quigley, A. G. Hicks, E. L. Adams, G. Burns, T. Todd, A. A. Fraser, H. L. Tempest, F. Tolerton, F. R. Ball, K. Te Ilau, H. L. Primrose, Captain Percy Smith, of the Salvation Army, and the secretary. Mr. W. M. Jenkins. Apologies were received from Messrs. D. W. Coleman, M.P., J. H. Hall and James Chrisp.
