LOSS TO DISTRICT

SECOND CLASS LAMBS EFFECT OF COMMANDEER CONCERN IN WAIRQA (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA. this day. The hope that by the beginning of next season there would be a clear understanding that light second-grade lambs from the Wairoa district would be suitable for export was expressed at the annual meeting of the Wairoa branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union.

Mr. T. LeC. Powdrell, a member of the electoral committee of the New Zealand Meat Board, stressed the importance of this class of lamb to Wairoa. Last season 12,000 were exported from this district. They were, lie said, Romney wether lambs and it was of the utmost importance to the farmers to be able to get rid of them.

lie added that with the commandeer the export of these lambs was prohibited, and instead of being in the old and 7Ad class they were classed as lean meat, or pelt class, and worth about as. As a result this district stood to lose between £OOOO and £12,(.00 each year..

He was thoroughly convinced that ;he iambs were a good edible type, lie had taken the question up with the Meat Board and eventually authority was given for 85 per cent of the lambs to go forward. In the meantime, however, the picking had "decreased,” with the result that instead of £12,000 the district received only £BOOO or £4OOO, lambs to this value being the only ones to go He hoped that bv the start of next season there would be a clear understanding that the lambs would be suitable for export and that the district would get not 85 per cent but !00 per cent of them away.
