CLEARING WILLOWS
With the object of improving the quality of an extensive area of land in the Mangaoronga and Waimiihi districts, and to minimise flooding, the Public Works Department has undertaken a scheme for the clearing of the Mangaoronga Stream, Otorohanga, of willow trees. A large caterpillar tractor, fitted with a double drum winch, is employed to pull the willows out by the roots. The work will extend over 17 miles of the river’s length. The blockage caused by the willows has resulted in the land in the vicinity becoming waterlogged and sour.
