IN A QUANDARY
GISBORNE SHOW DATES CLASH WITH MANAWATU ALTERATION PROPOSED The Poverty Bay A. and P. Association is in something of a quandary in regard to the dates fixed for this year’s Show, in view of other dates clashing with the Gisborne fixture. A short time ago the Poverty Bay association agreed to hold the 1940 Show on November 5 and 6, in conformity with the practice adopted during the past two years. Prior to that the Gisborne Show had been held in the last full week in October .but as this clashed with the Hawke’s Bay-Wairarapa-Manawatu circuit it was agreed in 1937 to change to the first week in November. The new dates were found to be most suitable, enabling stock teams to do the circuit in the southern part of the North Island before returning for the Gisborne Show, and also allowing other exhibitors to get their stock in better show order. The first week in November was confirmed again for this year.
Since then, however, the Hawke’s Bay A. and P. Association, to which the Royal Show was allotted this year, agreed to alter its dates to a week later than usual, taking the old Gisborne dates, October 23 and 24. Following this lead, the Manawatu association, which has made a practice of being a fortnight behind Hawke’s Bay, fixed November 6 and 7 as its dates. No word has been received from Wairarapa yet, but it is understood that that association will follow its usual practice to hold its fixture on the week between the Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu shows. At a meeting of the Poverty Bay A. and P. Association on April 11 a discussion on Show dates is expected to take place. Suggestions have been made that the Gisborne Show this year should follow a week after Hawke’s Bay, thereby avoiding a clash with the two major fixtures but coming in the same week ns Wairarapa. Alternative proposals are that Gisborne should come in either after Manawatu or before Hawke’s Bay so that touring Show teams will be able to make their circuit of the Hawke’s Bay, Wairarapa and Manawatu events, but many believe that the former idea will make the Show too late and the other too early for the convenience of most exhibitors.
A full discussion on the matter is expected at the meeting, which also will be important as it will be the last of the general committee before the annual meeting, and nominations to fill vacancies on the committee will be received. Seven committeemen are retiring in rotation, while three other vacancies are to be filled because of death and departure from the district.
