CELTIC JUNIORS
HIGH STANDARD RUGBY LAST SEASON REVIEWED The high standard of the performances of the Celtic junior team during the last Rugby season is given special mention in the report to be presented to the annual meeting of members of the Celtic Rugby Football Club at the club rooms of the ■Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club to-morrow afternoon. The club was represented in four grades and although the performances generally were not of a high order the juniors excelled themselves, being the runners-up in the union’s competition and then taking the decision in the knock-out series. The members of the team played the .game in the right spirit and many of them this year will have places in the senior team.
The seniors took part in the annual Spillane Cup tournament at the beginning of the 1939 season in Wanganui and were the runners-up to St. Patrick’s, Palmerston North. In the final Gisborne Celtic were 'beaten only by a 3—nil decision. Later in the Reason the senior team suffered bv the transfer of players to outside districts and injuries to others. However, opposing teams were always assured of a hard game when in the field against Celtic. Fourth at Full Strength
Despite a shortage of players, the thirds gave a satisfactory account of themselves, their .good efforts being due mainly to the regular attenders. The fourth grade team was always at full strength, and should do belter this season in competition play. In their keenness they showed a good example to the senior and’third grade members of the club. Congratulations were extended to A. McAnenev and R. Rogers on their selection to take part in the All 'Black trials. The thanks of the committee were extended to the coaches. Messrs. F. McAneney, jun., G. Murland, M. Carlsen, and G. Dunn, to the vice-presi-dents, the St. John Ambulance, Drs. W. A. Bowie and A. Murray Scott, and the Poverty .Bay Rugby Referees’ Association. The best wishes of the club went to W. Steel and J. Svmes, members of the New Zealand Second Expeditionary Force. Sincere sympathy was extended to the relatives of Mrs. M. J. Kyne in their recent sad loss. The report concluded with an appeal to members to hold together in the true club spirit to carry on the game during these unsettled times.
