(Herald Correspondent.) The Wairata School was the scene of an enjoyable function on Good Friday, when the residents gathered in honour of Private F. Donnelly, who was home on leave. Private Donnelly holds the distinction of being the first soldier to enlist from the district. The gathering took the form of a picnic. After a delicious luncheon and afternoon tea had been served by the 9 ladies, Private Donnelly was presented with a well-filled wallet. Mrs. G. Hamilton, Okiore, was hostess at a young people’s party on Wednesday night, the guest of honour being Private F. Donnelly. Dancing and games were indulged in, radio items providing a pleasant interlude. A dainty supper was served by the hostess, who was ably assisted by her daughters, the Misses Elsie and Dorothy Hamilton. Messrs. J. and H. Redpath, G. Mead and G Donnelly have returned from a visii to Wellington, where they visited the Centennial Exhibition. Misses L. Mead, M. Donnelly, E. and D. Hamilton were also visitors to the Exhibition. Messrs. A. C. Nicholson, V. L. Wilson, G. Butler and B. Burnett were Easter visitors to the Waioeka Valley, and were the guests of Mrs. A. J. Macrae, Oponae. Mrs. J. Butler, Misses S. Butler and J. Hawkens were also the guests of Mrs. Macrae.—Mr. R. Watson, accompanied'by the Misses Penny, Whakatane, and Miss Watson, visited the valley on Easter Monday. Mr. Watson was one of the pioneer settlers of the valley, and is now resident at Edgecumbe, but still takes a great interest in the district.—Mr. and Mrs. Alister Gellert, Tolaga Bay, visited the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Gellert, Wairata, for Easter. —Mrs. A. F. Gellert, Wairata, has recovered from her recent indisposition.
