LOST IN BUSH
THREE WAIHI YOUTHS NIGHT SPENT IN RANGES To be lost in dense bush in the ranges north of Waihi was the lot of three youths who left Waihi on Saturday morning with the intention of gathering ferns. The party ‘ consisted of Frederick Smith, aged 18, apprentice carpenter, his brother Louis, aged 14, and Norman Thompson, aged 15. They look with them one meal, intending to return before nightfall, but. failed to do so. Their parents became anxious, and police parties headed by Constables W. Harper and E. Finch set out late that night. With others they searched tirelessly until late on Sunday afternoon, intending to start out again at daybreak next morning. A few minutes afterward the lads reached Waihi by car, a motorist having brought them from Wharepoa, where the> left tne bush miles away from wnere they had entered it. Although hungry they_were little the worse for their experience.
