A Lesson from the Past
How a lesson was learned from the ancient Incas and the Javanese in dealing with soil erosion problems in California hill side orchard lands was explained in an interview in Christchurch by Mr. Robert G. Bowman, an officer of the United States Soil Conservation Service. It was found on tlie sloping lands that orchards were suffering from loss of top-soil and gullying, with falling yields. After investigation, a system of terracing like that of the Incas and the Javanese was adopted. The trees stood on the bank of the terrace, the top of which was protected by a covering of grass. This prevented moisture from escaping too rapidly downhill. When in Napier be sure to call at the "Home of Good Eats”—that’s th* “Troeadaro"— Hastings Street*
