EXPORT TRADE DRIVE
COTTON INDUSTRY’S AIM COMMONS WELCOME BILL (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Mar. 2. Sir Andrew Duncan, President of the Board of Trade, spoke for the first time in the House of Commons last night in introducing the Cotton Industry Bill. The value of cotton exports last year, he said, exceeded £39,000,000 and represented 10 per cent of the total British exports. Therefore, in the very vital task of providing foreign exchange for the purchase of munitions, foodstuffs and other essential materials the Government looked with confidence and great hope to the very important contribution which the cotton industry was making. The bill, which, he added, would make possible the greatest effort desired by the leaders of the cotton industry, received a general welcome on all sides of the House of Commons. The Manchester Guardian states that the House grasped the purpose of the bill fairly well and realised that it has the backing of ail organisations in the industry. Now that the House of Commons has given such a favourable verdict on the second reading, it should hasten the remaining stages of the bill and allow the Cotton Board to get on with its work of putting a drive into the exporting offensive.
