GERMAN VOYAGES

CHECK IN ATLANTIC ONE CRAFT AFIRE REPORTS OF CAPTURES (Reed. March 4, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 3. A message sent from Montevideo on Friday stated that an intercepted wireless message revealed the presence in the South Atlantic of several German merchantmen accompanied by two submarines and a battleship which is believed to have left a Central American west coast port for Japan and changed its course southwards and rounded Cape Horn widely in order to avoid the patrols. The newspaper Dia announced on the bulletin board that a battle was in progress 200 miles off Cape Polonio. The British Legation at Montevideo insists that this cannot be confirmed. The Bermuda correspondent of the New York Times cabled on Saturday from Aruba, Dutch West Indies, that the German freighter Troia, of 2390 tons, was still burning off Jerez, Mexico. The Troja sailed simultaneously with the Heidelberg, which it was reported, had been captured by a British warship and was being towed to Trinidad. A .third German freighter attempting to run the blockade put back to port at Aruba.
