AMERICAN ENVOY

MISSION IN EUROPE WELCOME TO BERLIN TALK WITH RIBBENTROP PLAN TO SEE HITLER (Kle*. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. March 2, 9 a.m.) LONDON, March 1. A Berlin message states that the United States Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Sumner Welles, has arrived there in the course of his tour of Europe. He conferred with the German Foreign Minister, Herr von Ribbentrop. On his arrival Mr. Welles was greeted by Baron'von Weizaecker, the director of the political department of the German Foreign Office, Mr. Alexander Kirk, the United States Charge d’Affaires, and the entire staff of the United States Embassy, and also a group of Finnish journalists, who explained: “We want to show appreciation of the American help. We are counting on America to save us.” Mr. Welles proceeded to the Adlon Hotel to the accompaniment of the wailing of sirens, as the city was having a trial air raid alarm. A German Foreign Office official had travelled with Mr. Welles from the Swiss frontier. Mr. Welles told pressmen that his talk with Herr von Ribbentrop was extremely interesting. He added that he was meeting Herr Hitler tomorrow.
