APPEAL FOR LOAN

AUSTRALIAN RESPONSE MINISTER GRATIFIED FAITH IN WAR POLICY (Reed. March 2, 9 a.m.) CANBERRA, March 1. The acting Treasurer, Mr. P. C. Spender, announced that a magnificent and widespread response had been accorded the Commonwealth toau which opened to-day, resulting in more than half of the £18,00,0,000 required being subscribed when business ceased this evening. He emphasised that the fact that more than £9,000,000 had been obtained already was an eloquent testimony that the people of Australia had resolved whole-heartedly to co-operate with the Government’s war effort. Several assurance companies and some financial institutions had contributed an aggregate of £2,500,000.
