Has Won £35,100 With his success at Caulfield on Saturday, Ajax’s winnings amount to £35.100. lie is now eighth on fie list of the greatest Australian and New Zealand winners. Lovaals To Reappear Due to make a reappearance ai Pukekohe to-day, the Avondale Slakes winner Lovaals will probably be getting ready to contest the Champagne Stakes at Easter. Lovaals has raced only twice, winning the Avondale Stakes and finishing fourth in the Welcome Slakes. In tile interim she has been kept to her Work, and it is in her favour that she is fit, and will appreciate the easing of track conditions. Nomenclature A recent effort in nomenclature comes from Melbourne. The name King Alfred has been bestowed on a horse by King Heedless from Pastry. King Alfred was the heedless King who was chastised by an angry housewife for having allowed her cakes t> burn. Galloped On Bronwon was rather badly galloped on during the running of the Waihou Handicap at Te Aroha, and this may have accounted to a great extent for her mediocre showing. She has had a fairly solid campaign this season. In Easy Work , Sir Beau has been kept at easy work since racing at Trentham in January, but one or two gallops should fit him for the coming Wellington meeting. II is only a matter 'of this colt being at his best for him to add further to his winning record. Racing Date Transferred The Napier Park Racing Club will not now be holding a meeting on April 20, as the permit has been transferred to the Levin Racing Club. The Nanicr club now has four racing days in the year. Beau Vite’s Next An attraction af the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting next week will be the appearance of the fine three- : year-bid Beau Vite, who is to contest . the 20th Taranaki Stakes. Included in the list of past winners of this race are the names of many of New Zealand’s best classic winners. Many will remember the thrilling contest when Desert Gold beat Gloaming in 1919. A New Trainer J. McCauley, whom increasing weight has restricted riding opportunities, has been successful in securing a training license, and he will . take over the team formerly in charge fit his father, D. McCauley, at. Trentharn. The members of the team are four two-year-olds who are at present enjoying spells. Old Taproot The Herries Memorial Cup winner Gamos was making his seventeenth start for the season when he scored his latest win and his third success for the season. He was got by Musketoon from Croydon Lass, by TidalQueen March, by Lucullus —March, by Marble Arch—Lady Musket, and traces back to Ya Henna, one of the old taproots in the Stud Book and which continues to produce winners.
Yogi Well Related The Te, Aroha Centennial Cup winner Yogi is a brother to Peerless. They were got by Beau Pere from Prestige, by Limond—Homage, by Absurd — Eulogy. Stakes Winners The Chokeborc stable has provided several winners of the Dunedin Chamnagne Stakes, all with the exception of this year’s winner, Shikari, carrying the Clifford colours. The list is as follows:—Cynisca (1889), Stronghold 1 1904), Glenowlet (1905), Husbandman (1908), Sharpshooter (1909), Counterfeit (1911), Brown Owl (1912), Nightwatch (1913), Adjutant (1915), Good Hope (1910), Gamecock (1917), Heathcrcotc (1918), Miss Mimic (1919), Winter Wind (1920), Wild Hind U 923), Fracas (1933), Haughty Winner (1937), and Shikari (1940). An English Filly Favourite for the Trial Stakes a 4 the Winton meeting was Cross Rose, a name that was a conundrum to racegoers, says a southern writer'. Cross Rose ran unplaced, but such confidence must obviously have had some foundation. It is little wonder tint fe w should have known who Cross Rose was’. Not only was she making her debut, but she is an English tilly who has been imported to the Dominion by Mrs. M. .1. Irving, Albury, South Canterbury. 1 She was located for a time after her arrival at the Ekierslie Stud.
Foaled in 1930 to English time, Cross Rose now figures as a four-year-old. She is a grey mare by the Frenchbred Teddy horse Ximcnes, and is oul of Rosalie, by Fantomas, from Orenn, by Orpimcnt from Soligena. by Soldernis. It is the Bruce L’o’vve No. 4 family, and the branch to which Cross Rose belongs is that which produced Coronach, winner of the Derby and St. Lcger for the late Lord Woolavington in 192 G. Coronach was from Wet Kiss, who was another daughter of Soligena. Further back the lihe has also been responsible for such good English performers as Sir Visto, Bona Vista, and Ellangowan. Cross Rose was bred by Sir James D. Roberts, from whom she was purchased for export to the Dominion.
