WAR AND SPORT

AUSTRALIAN VIEWS Cancellation of the Australian women’s championship meeting, because of the war, has evoked criticism from many prominent, golfers in Melbourne clubs. Critics point out that women will continue to play probably as much golf as ever, but the benefit of their play may not be felt as much financially as if the championship had been played and the entry fees and the "gate” money devoted to charity funds. The secretary of the Australian Ladies’ Golf Union, in announcing the decision, explained, however, that the decision had been made unanimously by all the State unions.

Opposing the cancellation, leading golfers pointed out that the Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies, had advised the “carry on” principle in sport, and that ihe Governor-feeneral, Lord Gowric, had attended a Sheffield Shield cricket match and also witnessed the Australian tennis championships in Sydney last month.
