WAIMAKARIRI WORKS NIGHT WATCH ON RIVER (Per Press Association.) . CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Receiving an abnormal testing in the biggest flood on record, the Waimakariri River Trust protective works came triumphantly through and saved the city and the adjacent farm lands from disaster. River Trust employees assisted families in two settlements to leave their homes when the flood became menacing early last evening. More than 350 men were employed all night in patrolling the ’ banks and carrying out protective work. A big gang was engaged in filling sandbags which were rushed to spots where the flood threatened to cut its way through the bank 10 miles upstream Horn the camp. They were able to escape this morning when the waters subsided.
