NIGHT PLOUGHING
CONTINUOUS WORK CAMPAIGN IN BRITAIN EXTRA ACRES NEEDED RESPONSE TO APPEAL (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 12 noon. RUGBY, Feb. 29. Moving the second reading of a bill making miscellaneous war provisions, in connection with agriculture, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Lord Denham, mentioned in the House of Lords that during the last few days of fine weather ploughing had been going on right through the night by artificial light. In this way the ploughing had been continuous for from 22 to 23 hours daily. Yesterday, when addressing representatives of farmers, the Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, made an appeal for a special effort so that the interruption of farm work necessitated by the adverse weather earlier in the year should not result in the campaign for ploughing falling short of the objective of the extra 2,000,000 acres set by the Government.
