The total collections at Gisborne for February, 1940, were £7566 18s 9d, as against £7257 13s 9d for February, 1939, Revenue from the three main heads for the 11 months of the financial year now completed is still well ahead of the corresponding figures for last year. Otago for the month of February reveal an increase of a little over £4OOO in the revenue compared with February last year. There was a sharp fall in the net customs returns, but an advance in beer duty helped to make up the deficit, which was further reduced by a large number of additional taxes imposed under the war emergency regulations. Customs dtity collected during February amounted to £58.079, which was nearly £15,000 below the total collected in February, 1939. Beer duty, however, rose from £27,286 in; February of last year to £37,265 dviring the month ended yesterday. Returns from sales tax also showed an increase, the receipts for February being £23,255 as against £22973 in February of last year. /Despite the current petrol restrictions, petrol tax returns show only a smair decrease on those for last year, the receipts in February amounting to £15,416, compared with £15,946 in February, 1939. Gold duty is down by over £IO6O at £ll7l, and tyre tax fell from £1214 in February, 1939, to £494 last month. Wool export duty was £lßl as against £157 last year.
