GIANT WAVE HITS SHIP
FOUR SEAMEN INJURED CAPETOWN, Jan. 10. Four men were injured by a giant wave which struck a British liner off East Londbn on Saturday night. They had 'to be landed and taken to hospital. The incident was reported when the liner reached Capetown. One man, an elderly bosun’s mate, had his leg broken, and the others suffered, respectively, a broken rib, a broken nose and severe head injuries. It was stated on board that the vessel was just nbrth-east of Port St. Johns when she ran into one of the sudden confused seas for which that part of the coast is notorious. It was at the same spot that the Waratali was last seen in 1909. It had been raining earlier, but the wind was not abnormally strong. The men were stopping the ventillators forward on .the forecastle when a huge wall-like sea rose ahead and crashed down on them, carrying them against the windlass. The sea continued over the break of the fore castle and descended on more men at work on the forward well deck, bu they managed to keep their grip and were not injured. The ship was steaming at slow speed at the time. Two hours later the vessel was in comparatively calm water again.
