THE WEATHER Last Night’s Forecast General Situation: An anti-cyclone is centred to the north-east of the Dominion and a series of active westerly depressions continues to pass in the south. Forecast: Winds from between north and west prevailing, moderate to fresh generally and still reaching gale force at times in exposed positions from Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay southward. Seas: In New Zealand waters, rough about Cook Strait and south of Cape Egmont, moderate to rather rough north of Cape Egmont; elsewhere slight or moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Winds from a westerly quarter, moderate to fresh in the northern portion, with moderate seas; strong to gale force in the southern portion, with rough seas. Weather: Continuing unsettled in western areas, with mist or fog in places and scattered rain, more especially in Westland, where heavier falls are likely; elsewhere, mainly fair to cloudy, but with showers extending at times to eastern areas of the South Island. Temperatures: Cool to moderate in the south, warm east of the ranges, and mild elsewhere. To-day’s North Island Report A particularly high temperature was recorded at Gisborne at 9 a.m. to-day, the reading being higher by five degrees that n 74 degree temperature at Napier and much higher than at other centres throughout the North Island. The temperatures were: —Gisborne, 79 degrees; Napier, 74: East Cape. 73; Auckland. 69; Tauranga. 68: Opotiki, 67; Wellington, 61. Skies were cloudy and overcast, with rain at Opotiki and Wellington. Winds were strong south of Gisborne amt from northerly and north-westerly directions. Seas were slight to moderate, but rough in Cook Strait. Midday Forecast General Situation: A.n anticyclone is centred to the north-east while an extensive trough of low pressure lies across New Zealand and the Tasman Sea. Forecast: Fresh to strong north to north-west winds reaching gale force in places. Weather: Cloudy to overcast and unsettled with rain at times, especially in the back countrv. Temperatures: Mild.
