KILLED BY SHARK
YOUNG ATHLETE’S FATE HELP GIVEN IN VAIN A beach life-saver, Frederick Hooper, aged 18, died in Durban the other day from injuries received when attacked by a big shark off Warnadoonc the previous afternoon. Hooper had swum some distance beyond the breakers and was swimming back when the shark attacked him. His friend, Dennis Nourse, a Natal hockey player, who was floating close by on an air cushion dived to iiis help. “Fred and I were returning to the shore at the time.” Nourse said. “I was floating on an air cushion and he was swimming alongside. Suddenly he shouted, ‘Look out, a shark, and I saw a large grey-green object flash between us. Fred turned on his side in an effort to get away, but he was too late. He cried out that the shark had attacked him. ‘T dived oil my air cushion and went to his side. He was conscious, but seemed to be in a daze and, although he was badLy injured, he was still swimming. I helped him to the raft and shouted for assistance.” Mr. Tommy Juckes. the chief instructor of the South African Surf Life-Saving Association and captain of the Warnadoonc Surf Club, who was also on an air cushion and heard Nourse shout for help, saw that something serious had happened and went to Nourse’s assistance, the two helpers managed to bring Hooper to the shore and, after first-aid had been rendered to his right leg, which the shark had torn badly, lie was taken to hospital. Hooper, who was a promising athlete, was to have left next Saturday to train in the Air Force
