U.S. BLACKMAIL RING

ARREST OF MEMBERS EXTORTED £250,000 NEW YORK, Jan. 2. Operators of a blackmail racket, who have extorted £250,000 from prominent New York society people and £7OOO from a wealthy Englishman living there, have been smashed by the staff of Mr. Thomas Dewey, the District Attorney, according to an announcement made to-day. The names of the victims are being kept strictly secret. Already 24 members of the ring have been arrested and 15 of them have pleaded guilty and have been sent to prison. One appeared in a “line-up” at police headquarters this morning, and three others will shortly be brought into court. The money was extracted from perfectly innocent people by threatening to publish trumped-up but apparently convincing evidence of scandalous happenings in their homes.
