HORSE SICKNESS

AN UNUSUAL OUTBREAK CAPETOWN, Jan. 10. Horse sickness has assumed such serious proportions in the Clanwilliam district that the Capetown Veterinary Office is having a special inquiry made into the position. The outbreak is regarded as being extraordinary, both in its extent and in its duration. From Clanwilliam i>' is reported that between 1100 and 400 horses and mules have died in the Sandveld district and surrounding areas. On farms where inoculation has been carried out losses have been very small. But inoculation is only effective if if takes place at least three months before the germ attacks the horses. The disease began in November, but it was thought that with the dry weather it would diminish. Instead, however, it has continued unabated.
