GISBORNE PAIR-OARS

HANDICAP SERIES A series of pair-oar races was conducted by the Gisborne Rowing Club on the Taruheru River halfmile course on Saturday afternoon from the footbridge down to the shed. All the races were decided with the exception of the final. It was a handicap event, and nearly all the finishes were close. Considering the fact that crews were picked on the spot, this indicated the handicapper’s knowledge of the oarsmen’s capabilities. Results were: — First Round L. Franks (str.) and C. P. Perry, 3soc., defeated J. Hankey (str.) and J. Francis, scr., by a length. Hankey caught Franks at the Derby street bridge, but could not pass his opponent. A. Terry (str.) and I. Menzies, 4see., beat R. Walter (str.) and G. Ovven, Gsec. Terry caught his opponents just above Derby street, and in a close finish won by 3ft. L. Winstanley (str.) and A. Nicholls, ssec., beat A. Allen (str.) and F. Henry. 2sec. Winstanley led all the way to win by a length and a half. S. Allen (str.) and J. Perrett, Bsec., beat T. Williams (sir.) and K. Monk, scr., by one length.
