OTOKO CONSTRUCTION DOUBLE SHIFTS START CARE WANTED AT NIGHT Double shifts are to be worked on the Otoko Hill reconstruction job to ensure that the new highway will be available for traffic before the end of the summer. This announcement was made at a meeting of the Gisborne auxiliary last evening by the president of the Automobile Association (Auckland). Mr. F. G. Farrell, on advice from the district engineer, Mr. O. G. Thornton. It was learned this morning that fhmen would start their double shift? this evening, working until midnight each day. The gang will start work daily at 5 a.m. as usual. Heavy traffic is still prohibited from using the route during the hours of darkness, and the Public Works Department advises private traffic at night to exercise care. There will be headlights on the bull-dozers, but motorists should take the precaution of getting out of their vehicles at night to sec that ilie road is clear before negotiating the section on which the men arc working. Sixty chains of the formation has been completed, representing twothirds of the length of the contract. However, as a start has been made on the light end of the job. only half the quantity of material estimated in the total for the job has been shifted. The date for the completion of the contract is ‘ uncertain as it depends on the state of the weather. If there is no rain in the meantime the new formation can be completed next month and so be ready for the Easter traffic. At the bottom end of the hill there is much heavy work io he done in the cuttings and fillings, and it may be necessary to close the road during week-ends while some of the bigger corners are being cut.
