DECISIVE WIN

REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET LEAD OF 133 RUNS H.B. BEAT WAIROA (Special to the JltiraUl.) WAIROA, this day. A decisive first-innings victory by 133 runs was gained by Hawke’s Bay when they visited Wairoa at the weekend. thus inaugurating an annual I fixture between the Wairoa and Hawke's Bay cricket associations. On the day’s play there was no doubt that the visitors were vastly superior to the Wairoa side, their batting, fielding and bowling all being of an exceptionally high standard. Wairoa won the toss and put Hawke’s Bay in to bat first. Although the game started in a strong southwesterly wind, this did not appear to worry the batsmen in any way, 269 runs being on the board when the last wicket fell. The principal scorer for the visitors was J. Askew, who gave a delightful display, his total of 63 including three sixes and six fours. In one over off M. Unwin, the Wairoa medium pace bowler, he scored 23 runs. A. Dean gave a finished display of batting, his total of 50 including some nicely-placed shots all round the' wicket. Bowling for Wairoa, D. McKenzie was the most successful, securing three wickets for 33 runs, M. Unwin capturing two for 57. The Hawke’s Bay bowlers had the Wairoa batsmen worried from the start, the only players to make anything like a stand being W. Harrison, who scored 40 runs,'and W. Irwin, who scored 39, after a confident display. T. Rosenberg bowled well for Hawke’s Bay, securing three wickets for 24 runs. G. Stanford took two for 14. E. Meissner two for 18. ■ and G. Toothill two for 19.
