EASTER DATES
SHOPPING HOLIDAYS CONFUSION OF DIARIES OFFICIAL RULING Retailers and employees in Gisborne have been, occasioned some concern and uncertainty owing to a difference in the dates given by some diaries for Easter, 1940. The official ruling on the matter is that Easter Day falls upon March 24. Good Friday, therefore, will be celebrated on March 22, and Easter Monday on March 25, and holidays for shop and factory employees, as for outdoor workers, will extend from March 21 to 26, not inclusive. The method of fixing the Easter dates is based upon the phases of the moon. The rule is that Easter Day falls upon the first Sunday following the first full moon after March 21 in each year. Thus it follows that this season’s dates are about as early as it would be possible to fix. Not until 1948 will Easter fall in March again.,
