SWIMMING TITLES GISBORNE CARNIVAL S. THOMPSON'S EFFORT * The title events produced some splendid finishes last night at the carnival conducted by the Gisborne Amateur Surf and Swimming Club at the Macrae bath. The previous record for the 220yds. breaststroke championship. 3min. 8 1-5 sec., established by S. Thompson in January, 1939, went by the board when he sent in a time of 3min. Gscc. for the distance. Thompson’s time was ssec. outside the New Zealand record and he was not pushed at any stage. It was announced that ho was the ■club’s nominee in that: event in the Dominion championships to be conducted at Wellington on February 10, The 100yds senior title was won by D. Lange, who was only a touch ahead of H. Holmes. Lange, the title-holder, was just a second slower than his record time. In the women’s championship for the same distance there were only two entries, but the contest was a close one, Miss J. McGregor covering the distance in a second outside the record established by Miss H. McKnight in 1937. A new race, of 150yds. to bring the boys’ distance into line with Hawke’s Bay championship requirements was swum, P. Henderson being the winner and establishing the time of 2min. 10 sec.
