WAVES OF TROOPS DRIVE AGAINST FINNS MASSED ARTILLERY FIRE ATTACKS REPULSED INEFFECTIVE AIR RAIDS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press assn.) (Reed. Jan. 24, noon.) LONDON, Jan. 23.

Helsinki reports state that the Russians are hurling fresh waves of troops against the Mannerheim line. Apparently they intend to force a decisive battle.

Tens of thousands of shells from massed artillery are covering infantry thrusts at various points.

It is officially stated- that the Russians dropped 400 bombs on 10 centres in Finland yesterday, but damaged only 10 buildings and wounded three people. Sortavalla suffered most.

A Finnish communique issued in Helsinki states that the Russians near Kitola lost 123 meju “We repulsed attacks at Loimola, on the Lake Ladoga front, killing 450 of the enemy besides gaining successes further north from Lake Ladbga,” the communique adds.

A Russian communique announces small skirmishes on all fronts and artillery activity.
