GISBORNE COMPLAINTS SEALING SUGGESTED NO ACTION POSSIBLE CONSERVING BITUMEN “Without exaggerating, I can . say that it is necessary to dust furniture six or seven times a day in my house, even when practically all the windows are closed,” wrote Mr. H. B. Tyerman in a letter to the Gisborne Borough Council last night, when complaining of the dust nuisance in Sheehan street. “Besides ruining furniture and curtains, the letter added, “we are also faced with the health aspect of these dust clouds, a matter which cannot be seen or estimated.” The writer also stated that all side streets off Ormond road were sealed except Sheehan street. Cr. E. Harris agreed that the position in Sheehan street was bad. The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., said that councillors would agree with him that the bituminising of Sheehan street was out of the question at present. It was a street that the council would have to seal eventually, but it was necessary at present to conserve its bitumen supplies. The letter was received and the council agreed to explain the matter to Mr. Tyerman. Aberdeen Road Complaint At the previous meeting, an Aberdeen road resident, Mr. H. J. Poole, offered to pay half the cost of abating the dust nuisance there. Reporting on the application, the works committee stated that in view of the necessity for conserving stocks of bitumen for maintenance purposes, the committee was unable to recommend that a section of the road be surfaced in order to eliminate the dust nuisance. “The section of the roadway referred to is water-bound macadam," the report stated, “a type of road which is far- less dusty than many of the gravel roads in' the borough. In the opinion of your committee, . the surfacing of gravelled roads, especially those which carry a large volume of traffic, should receive first consideration.” The report was adopted;
