SANK A SUBMARINE

AUCKLAND PILOT IN R.A.F.

OFF SCOTTISH COAST

A German submarine has been sunk off the coast of Scotland by an Auckland man, now serving with the Royal Air Force, whose first introduction to aviation was as an entrant in a flying scholarship contest conducted by the Auckland Aero Club under the auspices of the Auckland Herald in 1937. He is Pilot Officer lan Patterson, only son of Mr. John Patterson, One Tree Hill. Just 21 years of age, Pilot Officer Paterson was on coastal patrol duty when he sighted a U-boat on the surface. He promptly attacked, and the first bomb from his machine scored a direct hit to one side of the conning tower. Severely damaged, the U-boat partly submerged, but came to the surface again out of control and finally dived at a steep angle. A second bomb struck the water immediately above the sinking craft and a growing pool of oil showed on the surface. No further trace of the submarine was seen. After a brief association with farming, Pilot Officer Patterson joined tiie Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1938. After instruction he was sent to England in February of last year. He was finally posted to a squadron stationed in the north of Scotland.
