STATE LEAD NEEDED
FARMERS’ ENLISTMENT SERVICE OVERSEAS (Per Press Association.) WHANGAREI, this day. Whether farmers could best serve the country by continuing production or enlisting was a question demanding an authoritative statement, said Mr. J. A. S. Mackay, when the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Committee met the Northland zone of the patriotic committee. A fair percentage of Northlanders being accepted for service overseas were farmers and their sons, said Mr. Mackay. Expressing his personal opinion, Sir Ernest Davis said that producing fanners should remain while those who could be spared should go. Sir Ernest undertook to ask the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, to bring the matter before the Cabinet for decision.
Lethargy towards the war effort and patriotic appeals was deplored by several speakers. Mr. Rodney Coates instanced a district function, which was held for farewelling soldiers, had resulted in a loss.
Mr. A. Ely, a member of the central committee, said: “The Government has got to give a lead. There is need for the Minister or a responsible person to stir the imagination of the people.”
