MINTLAW’S CUP

THAMES MEETING DAY OF SURPRISES DAUBER TAKES HURDLES SMALL ‘TOTE” INCREASE (Per Press Association.) THAMES, -this day. The feature of Saturday’s racing at the Thames meeting was the surprise win of Mintlaw in the Goldfields Cup. Horses trained by R. S. Bagby at Ellerslie are usually well supported, but not so Mintlaw on Saturday; his backers on the win machine handled over a third of a century dividend. There was merit in the win, as Mintlaw was tailing the field at one stage and was still giving the leaders a good start at the home turn. Dauber made a successful debut as a hurdler and never gave his opponents a chance .in the Maramarua Hurdles. There were some solid dividends during the afternoon. Fairfield, third in the Puriri Handicap, returned just over a score.

The weather was fine till late in the afternoon, when a misty rain fell, but the track was in excellent order.

During the day the sum of £27,231 10s passed through the totalisator, against £27,006 last year, an increase of £225 10s. Results:—
