“The question has been held up so long, and now that something has come officially, we would like to support it; this is what we wanted,” said the chairman of the Pahiatua County Council, Mr. A. W. Bisset, when the Transport Department’s proposed new heavy traffic fees came before the council. The proposal is that lorries up to four tons laden weight, if owned by a farmer or market-gardener, and used by the owner exclusively in connection with his business, should be allowed a reduction of 50 per cent in the heavy traffic fees normally payable. Heavy traffic provisions would then be enforced in respect of all farmers’ trucks. The council decided to support the proposed regulation with a recommendation that the limit should be increased to five tons.
